Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern, a professor of Jewish studies at Northwestern University in Chicago, historian, philologist and essayist, presented his lecture at NaUKMA’s Program in Jewish Studies in Kyiv.
Prof. Petrovsky-Shtern is a Visiting Professor at NaUKMA, a Fellow at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute and a Visiting Professor at the Free Ukrainian University in Munich. He received an honorary doctorate degree from NaUKMA in January 2014.
He is the Crown Family Professor of Jewish Studies and a Professor of Jewish History. He teaches a variety of undergraduate-level courses that also include “Ukraine: History and Culture; and Slavic-Jewish Literature”.
He was born in Kyiv in 1962 to the family of Miron Petrovsky, a noted Ukrainian philologist. He studied art and music early on, and for some time sang in the Shchedryk children’s choir.
