Mission Statement of The National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy
The National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy has been an ambitious
educational establishment for much of its history and the preeminent
academic institution in Eastern Europe of the 17-18 centuries. Established
in 1615 (named Kyiv Mohyla Academy) as the first institution of higher
learning in Ukraine, it was soon recognized as the leading educational,
cultural and spiritual center of the region when its mission became
educating enlightened leaders of Ukraine.
After the Russian Conquest the Academy was closed by the tsars and its
physical space was used for military purposes during the 70-year Soviet
regime. In 1991, Kyiv Mohyla Academy rose as a "phoenix from its ashes", was
reestablished on its original grounds as a national university with its
traditional mission of educating the future leaders of Ukraine. Today, Kyiv
Mohyla University includes departments of humanities, social sciences,
natural sciences, law, economics, social work, business management, and
computer science, where instruction is carried out in both Ukrainian and
English languages.
Returning to its original mission of over 300 years ago, The National
University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy today aspires to educate its students in
an atmosphere of intellectual freedom that fosters independent and critical
thought and encourages creative and novel approaches to traditional
questions within a context of moral principles and standards of fairness,
equality, tolerance and human decency. The ultimate objective of The
National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy's mission is to educate and
prepare a new generation of Ukrainian men and women for their future roles
of leadership in actively shaping a dynamic new civil society of modern age
Ukraine.
To achieve its mission and realize its goals, The National University of
Kyiv Mohyla Academy, in cooperation with other academic institutions of
excellence, is committed to become a prominent intellectual center which
provides and nurtures a creative approach to education that brings forward
excellence and self realization of its students, faculty, researchers and
scholars; to be an enthusiastic advocate of national identity and culture and
commitment to democratic political process and participation in public life;
to re-establish itself as a respected leader in innovative scientific,
educational and managerial thought and practice;
and to conduct its activities as a progressive educational enterprise which seeks to constantly improve its teaching and research curriculum and other academic services and continually evaluate its various components in terms of its own mission and goals.
