Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Hosts Cardinal Lubomyr Huzar
The topics discussed in the Cardinal’s presentation and round table discussion were directed at the issue and meaning of freedom. Two sentences that were quoted by Cardinal Huzar and defined the essence of the message were, “You will know the truth and it will set you free” (John 8:32) “The only tyrant a person has is ignorance” (Victor Hugo). Patriarch Lubomyr Huzar stated that, “The Church and the University are the places where young people will find freedom”.

Patriarch Huzar was welcomed by Dr. Volodymyr Morenets, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy’s first vice-president and vice-president of academic affairs. Professor Morenets stated, “it is not a coincidence that the organization “Obnova” chose our university as the place for this meeting”. Dr. Morenets continued, “His Beatitude Lubomyr visited Kyiv-Mohyla Academy on previous occasions. NaUKMA is not only an educational institution, but it is a center of thought, it is a center of a living spirit, the spirit of learning, and above all, the spirit of hope”.
The students and faculty were deeply moved by the Patriarch’s words. Dr. Mychailo Wynnyckyj, director of the Academy’s doctoral program emphasized in his presentation that, “a university can play an important role in the education of a well-rounded young individual only if there are conditions that not only provide knowledge, but if there is also an environment of Love and Spiritual Enlightenment”. Dr. Wynnyckyj continued, “this type of environment is impossible to create without the freedom of university autonomy”. Oksana Roman, representative of the organization “Obnova”, emphasized the importance of the role of the Church and the University in the education of free and responsible individuals.
