Congratulations to Professor Ola Hnatiuk

Ola Hnatiuk, historian, author, translator and essayist, a leading intellectual received the title of professor at KMA at a recent ceremony marking the occasion.

Ola Hnatiuk was born in Warsaw, and received her degree in Philology and Doctor of Science at the University of Warsaw. In 2006-2010, Dr. Ola Hnatiuk served in the Diplomatic Corps of Poland as First-Counsellor, Head of the Science, Education, and Culture Department at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ukraine. She also was a Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute Fellow in 2001-2002. Dr.Hnatiuk is a professor at the University of Warsaw and at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including Polonia Restituta (Poland’s highest state award), the Antonovych Foundation Award for fostering Polish-Ukrainian cultural cooperation, and the Pryszynski Polish PEN-Club Award. Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is proud of such an eminent historian on its faculty.

Her book Courage and Fear (originally published in Polish in 2015) received awards in Ukraine and in Poland and it was published in 2019 in English translation by Academic Studies Press.  In her review of the book, Marci Shore writes, “As a researcher, she Hnatiuk is impeccable in her commitment to thoroughness, her respect for truthfulness, her attention to nuance and her resistance to whitewashing moral ambiguity”. 

Her book about the difficult history of the city of Lviv, when it was called Leopolis, Lwow, Lemberg, Lvov, and now Lviv, is the history of the city and its people under various occupations and historical periods. The book received praise from leading figures such as Serhii Plokhy, Serhiy Zhadan, Dorota Sierori-Galusek, Timothy Snyder, Marci Shore and others. We extend sincere congratulations to Dr. Ola Hnatiuk on her recognition and publications.
