Yohanan Petrovsky Shtern, Ph.D., is a professor of Jewish studies at Northwestern University in Chicago.  He is a historian, philologist essayist, and also an accomplished artist.  Prof. Petrovsky-Shtern is a Visiting Professor at NaUKMA, a Fellow at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, and a Visiting Professor at the Free Ukrainian University in Munich. He received an honorary doctorate degree from NaUKMA in January 2014. He is the Crown Family Professor of Jewish Studies and a Professor of Jewish History at Northwestern University. He teaches a variety of courses that also include “Ukraine: History and Culture; and Slavic-Jewish Literature”. He has been a visiting professor at the universities in Toronto, Paris, Kyiv, Lviv, Warsaw, Krakow, Munich, and Jerusalem. He was born in Kyiv in 1962 to the family of Miron Petrovsky, a noted Ukrainian philologist.
